You Just Got Engaged… Now What?

Winter Wander-land: Your Anti-Stress Guide to Getting Engaged Over the Holidays

kiss

So amidst the chaos and bliss of planning parties and having some hard-earned time off from work, you’ve gotten engaged! Mazel tov!

But- seriously- you just got engaged…now what?

It can definitely be stressful to think about planning for the future when you’re trying to just enjoy the present. Well, we’re here to say relax, sit back, and drink that little glass of bubbly…we got this.

7336938e2b195b85463ceacf6eefc07d

Here are some steps to calm you once you’re on the road to tying the knot.

1. Give Yourself a Minute

Before you post about this magnificent revelation on a myriad of social media platforms, give yourself a few days to just feel the joy of it for you and your fiancé. Of course, tell your family and close friends. But we’ve found from asking around that folks derive a lot of pleasure from keeping the news close to their heart for a few days.  Do something just the two of you to honor this fleeting and interesting time of your lives, something unrelated to wedding planning and solely related to being engaged: go to a pottery class and make mugs that say “Fiancée”; go on a hike and engrave your names in the sand; or indulge in a session with an affordable & interesting photography brand like Flytographer to take photos of you as a newly engaged couple.

2. Go ahead and brag about it!

Get your girlfriends together, pop some champs and gush over how he popped the question.  Go one step further and even submit your story to How He Asked, a blog totally dedicated to explaining just that  (especially if your fiancée pulled out all the stops–and something tells us, they did). Also, think of a sweet, clever, and EASY way to acknowledge the pending nuptials at your holiday party, especially if you’re hosting. That way you won’t be avoiding the subject entirely, but you also won’t be stressing about planning some kind of hybrid engagement/holiday bonanza. Try something DIY like these glitter champagne bottles that your guests can take home as a memento!

3. Window Shop (via Wedding Spot)

The most daunting thing to plan…the venue: Wedding Spot  is a brilliant solution to the stress and intimidation of planning a wedding venue. Self-described as “Kayak for the wedding industry,” they are a tiny but mighty female-owned company and the first ever online site that allows you to search, price out, and compare wedding venues without ever leaving the comfort of your bed (we’re all about that).

4. Think about Fashion

Vow to be Chic is a pretty magical idea. We admit it leaves us wondering why no one had thought of this brilliance before. You can rent the hippest designer bridesmaid dresses, as well as gorgeous wedding gowns, what they charmingly call “Little White Dresses,” online…wait for it…starting at $50. They take the stress out of adorning yourself for your wedding, so that you can look forward to the fun rather than dread the financial burden. In their words, “an affordable, convenient, and stylish alternative to the status quo…bringing an age-old tradition into the 21st century.”

5. Get Back to Relaxing

Now the best part: THE HONEYMOON. Wanderable takes the stress out of planning the trip of your lifetime, since we’ve done all the research for you. Name it: the destination, restaurants, beaches, bars… with Wanderable’s curated experience network, this is all done for you- you just have to click and add.  Another plus: Not having 1,000 browsers open and getting overwhelmed and throwing your computer across the room. The world is your oyster, and the sky’s the limit. Register for a honeymoon instead of a toaster…and collect experiences, not things. Whoever you marry should be the person you want to travel the world with…that’s our founding belief.

Your loved ones want to give you a gift that really matters; and while china chips and silver tarnishes, that trip you take as a married couple is something that’ll stay bright in your memories, for life. Oh and did we mention Wanderable also has personalized postcards that act as thank you notes?  Go ahead and cross that off your list as well. But don’t just take it from us, here’s some advice from a REAL WanderableCouple on why they chose to go with experiences, over things.

Oh and before we forget, you can enter right now to win a six night trip to Hawaii, and use THAT as your honeymoon.

You’re welcome.

#WanderableGypset: The Broke Backpacker

Camel

Will, the Broke Backpacker, is a self-described “wandering adventurer, travel writer and amateur photographer.” Although, judging from his photos below, we’d like to call his bluff on the “amateur.” He starts his bio on his well-trafficked site by saying, “I like to get muddy, naked and painted.” He has lived in India for a year, worked on bars in Vietnam, herded goats in the Holy Land and conquered the highest navigable pass in the world armed with a poorly drawn map and a packet of ritz crackers. Will insists that if you know how to travel cheap, you really can travel forever, and his beautiful blog generously teaches you the tricks of his trade. We had to interview him for our Gypset series, for obvious reasons, and he graciously obliged.

Wanderable: Walk me through an average day in your un-average life.

Broke Backpacker (Will): Pretty hard to do to be honest as every day is totally different. Sometimes, I wake up early, do a bit of a workout and then hit the town / mountain / beach or jungle to explore for the day! Other times, I have work to do and end up spending most of the day on my laptop… but I try to avoid that!

W: How did you come to lead such a life? Did you always want to be a traveler, or did you just fall into this?

Jodhpur

BB: I’ve always wanted to travel, I like maps… since I was a kid I have been obsessed with putting pins in maps and collecting National Geographics. I first started travelling when I was 18 and although there has been the odd hiccup I would not change it for the world…

W: Which Wanderable Experience would you most love to try ?

BB: Wow! These look pretty awesome – Ok, I guess I would have to go for one of the Hawaii experiences, I have never been there– it looks likes an amazing place to be.

W: What pays the bills?

BB: I make some money off my website but I also write articles for a few travel companies on a freelance basis – this is what keeps me travelling and pays for flights!

W: What do you miss about “home” (where you’re originally from)?

BB: Crossfit. I am obsessed. My biggest complaint about travelling is I miss out on my workouts… I actually wrote an article about the 7 things I miss about home just last week.

Will

W: If you could bring anything/anyone from home, what/who would that be?

BB: I miss a couple of my friends particularly badly – we’re like brothers. I also miss my actual Brother! But I am heading to the Philippines with him in a few months 🙂

W: Advice for aspiring backpackers? Go.

BB: The best advice I can give anyone who want’s this kind of lifestyle is make the transition, make an active decision to get out there and explore on your own. Don’t wait for the perfect time, the perfect flight or the perfect travel buddy – none of these things will ever align, just grab your pack and hit the road.

India

W: What location is on your bucket list, and why?

BB: Iran – I’ve heard the people are amazingly friendly and I’m a mountain junkie… there’s a lot of mountains. I would also love to explore Papau New Guinea, it’s raw, untamed and largely unexplored by the backpacker crowds.

W: What are your go-to travel essentials?

BB: I never travel anywhere without my Morakniv Knife. My iPod Touch is also super useful, I can write entire articles on a super bumpy bus!

How to Choose

W: What was the best thing you recently ate?

BB: Just today, I found one of the best ice-cream parlours I have ever visited… in the middle of a tiny fishing village in the middle of nowhere.

We are thrilled to announce a partnership with a start-up we truly admire. Wedding Spot is a brilliant solution to the stress and intimidation of planning a wedding.  They are a tiny but mighty female-owned company and the first ever online site that allows you to search, price out, and compare wedding venues without ever leaving the comfort of your bed.

33d493ec1633cbe67d606fe0f7a2d1be

You can search by category: hotel wedding, vineyard wedding, ranch wedding. That’s nothing new, but Wedding Spot calls every single venue to interview them, enters their information into a database, and offers automatic, instantaneous price quotes to users when they enter in their specific wedding details (think of Kayak, but for weddings).

The best thing about this partnership? We’ve teamed up with Wedding Spot to give away a dream Hawaiian honeymoon! Emphasis on dream: You get to stay three nights at the Fairmont Kea Lani, fill your days on Maui with snorkeling, a sunset cruise and a luau. Then, hop on over to the Big Island where you’ll get to stay three nights at the Fairmont Orchid and receive a Flytographer vacation photographer to capture your favorite moments as you soak up the sun!

With a Mai Tai in your hand and the sand between your toes, this is #BeachLife.
